Note: There's a catch with the free hotel accommodation offered by Southern China Airlines. What they don't clearly mention is that it's only free if two people share a room. If you're traveling alone, you have to pay $20 or 135 RMB—unless you're willing to share the room with another person, which I chose not to do. I ended up paying, but it was totally worth it because the room was great and it came with a free buffet breakfast.

with Southern China Airlines
🛫 Leg 1: Manila to Guangzhou – Let the Journey Begin
The day I (Charizsa) finally got my Schengen visa, Michael quickly booked me a budget-friendly one-way flight with Southern China Airlines from Manila (MNL) to Frankfurt (FRA) for only €260. The route included a 22-hour layover in Guangzhou (CAN), which at first sounded exhausting—but I had read about potential free transit visas, complimentary hotel stays, and even free shuttle services for eligible travelers.
✨ Spoiler alert: The experience turned out to be way better than I expected.
When I landed in Guangzhou, I headed straight to the Temporary Visa Counter inside the airport. at the arrival (near the immigration) The process was smooth:

✅ Free 24-hour China Transit Visa issued within 30 minutes. ✅ Fingerprints & photo (at the immigration)
🏨 Free Hotel & Shuttle in Guangzhou
Southern China Airlines partners with local hotels to offer free accommodation for long layovers. After passing immigration, I followed signs and asked the help desk for hotel shuttle details.
I was booked into a 4-star airport hotel with free breakfast and a hot shower waiting. A huge bonus on such a long trip!

🏨✈️ Flight to Frankfurt… with a Stop in Shenyang?!
The next day, I returned to Guangzhou airport, boarded my flight to Frankfurt.

🛃 Went through immigration again
🧳 Had to carry personal items and clear document check
Even though I was in transit, immigration officers reviewed my documents again—adding about 30 minutes to the journey.
⚠️ Tip: Keep your passport, boarding pass, and visa handy. Be patient—this is routine for some China Southern routes.
🛬 Arrival in Frankfurt – Tired but Impressed
After a total of 42 hours in transit, I landed in Frankfurt (FRA). Exhausted? Yes. But the free hotel, visa process, and unexpected Shenyang stop made this one of the more memorable travel stories I’ve had.
